IP READING CHIEMSEE

The Intergenerational Program Reading was tested the first time in late 2009 with the friendly support of the nursing home Zettl in Bavaria, Germany. The IP connects young and old through literature. In each session 4-6 children visit one of the nursing homes of Zettl. There they meet 8-12 senior citizens who often have either mental or physical disabilities.

The children choose short stories and read them in front of their watchful audience. It is a great experience for the young readers to realize how great it is, in our fast paced world, if other people attentively listen.

Almost all of the children who came to one session become regular readers. They often talk about the program at school, which inspires some of their friends to give it a try. It is a simple and yet quite effective way to connect the two age groups.

Partners: Nursing homes Zettl and primary school Breitbrunn, Chiemgau.
